Abstract

Elder abuse remains a pervasive issue in healthcare, particularly in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. This study investigates the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in preventing elder abuse by enhancing nurses' interpersonal communication and empathy. The research includes a survey of nurses working in geriatric care, assessing their emotional intelligence levels and examining incidents of elder abuse or neglect. The results show that nurses with higher EI are less likely to engage in abusive behaviours and more likely to report suspected abuse. This presentation will explore how EI training can be implemented as part of nursing curricula and continuing professional development to promote ethical, compassionate care for vulnerable older adults.
