Abstract

Accurate protein quantification of IGF-I and P-III-NP in blood is needed for antidoping testing, especially with the desire to monitor these proteins in the ‘athlete biological passport’. The development of LC–MS methodologies can be complicated and often require incorporation of appropriate reference standards. In addition to validation within a laboratory, LC–MS methods should be assessed for inter-laboratory agreement as well as compared across blood matrices to extend the scope and applicability of biological analysis. Hence, it is anticipated that in the not too distant future LC–MS methodologies will become the Gold Standard approach for protein quantification in antidoping and will effectively replace immunoassays.
