N2 - This chapter started life as a short paper published in Clinical Psychology Forum in 2018, which I was then invited to present at the 2019 annual conference for the British Psychological Society (BPS) Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) as part of a symposium on Racism, Psychology and Invisibility brought together by Craig Newnes. The choice of the last word - ‘invisibility’ - reflected the frustration that I and others presenting at the symposium felt at the reluctance at naming racism as a force experienced by our service users, in my case service users with learning disabilities and their families and supporters, and ever present in the institutions where we worked.
