Abstract

There is an ongoing epidemic of obesity. Weight loss in this cohort is associated with significant reduction in morbidity and mortality. The focus on developing and refining surgical techniques for bariatric surgery has driven down perioperative morbidity and mortality. This perceived safety of bariatric surgery has led to a massive increase in uptake of the techniques. Alongside the development of novel surgical techniques, recent studies have identified a major effect of psychosocial factors on long-term outcomes after bariatric surgery. While the involvement of behavioral health specialists is likely to improve outcomes after bariatric surgery, this is only one of many recent developments in the field. It is now nearly impossible even for experienced scientists and clinicians to remain up-to-date. For those new to the field, it is difficult to know which of the myriad of available resources are reliable. To assist colleagues who are interested in understanding more about the metabolism and physiology of bariatric surgery, we have compiled tables containing reliable, up-to-date resources in this chapter.
