Abstract
This article presents a microhistorical examination of Co. Cavan during the 1641 rebellion, focusing especially on religious conflict. Drawing extensively on the two volumes of witness depositions for the county, it presents an argument for the central importance of religion in understanding violence, not only in Cavan, but throughout Ireland during the seismic 1641-2 period.
