Abstract

Nicotine is one of the most commonly used recreational drugs. It is contained in tobacco plant products that can be either chewed, sucked, or smoked. More recently, vaping has become popular whereby nicotine is obtained via a liquid in an electronic cigarette. Regardless of the mode by which tobacco or its products are used, there is considerable evidence that nicotine has many neuroactive effects and is highly addictive. The detailed mechanisms relevant to the neurological effects of nicotine and treatment modalities for nicotine addiction are relatively recent discoveries in the timescale of tobacco usage. To aid further understanding, this chapter lists the resources on the regulatory and professional bodies, journals, books, and websites that are relevant to an evidence-based approach to the neuroscience of nicotine.
