Abstract

This essay analyses the often inconsistent and inadequate treatment of blasphemous oaths in critical editions of Shakespeare’s plays. Arguing that swearing provides a crucial point of access into character, genre and debates about the status of extreme language, it explores new approaches to glossing and annotating these unruly words.
