Small stories research: a narrative paradigm for the analysis of social media

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

In this chapter I present the main rationale, methods and analytical tools for extending small stories research, a narrative and identities analysis paradigm, to social media. I show what methods can be used and how we can extend the vocabulary of small stories to online contexts. I specifically introduce two key concepts that aid the analysis of stories on social media platforms, namely narrative stancetaking and rescripting. I illustrate these two concepts with reference to my analysis of data from Facebook and YouTube. Finally, I sketch certain avenues for further development of the paradigm, stressing the need for a critical agenda.
