Abstract

A blog post for the British Library Asian and African Studies Blog, on their collection of materials pertaining to Sophia Elizabeth Plowden's sojourn in India 1777-90 and her collection of Persian and Hindustani songs c. 1780–88. It accompanies the podcast “The Courtesan and the Memsahib”, produced by Chris Elcombe with harpsichordist Jane Chapman, and is part of my British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship “Histories of the Ephemeral: Writing on Music in Late Mughal India”.
