Abstract

Recent years have seen the growth of the Assisted Reproduction industry across the world. as more and more people turn to countries other that their own to purchase reproductive services that are either too expensive, or unavailable, at home. In turn, this have given rise to reproductive tourism, with hotels, travel agencies and airlines offering particular packages for those seeking such services. India has become something of a leader in providing medical services and has the dubious distinction of being known as the 'surrogacy outsourcing capital' of the world. This exploratory study conducted by doctors, academics, activists, covers four cities in India. It examines, through a combination of qualitative interviews and internet research, the ways in which the industry functions, the self-perceptions of the protagonists, the nature of the transactions that take place, and the characters who are involved.
