Abstract

Inpatient therapy for depression in Germany takes place in health insurance-financed psychiatric or psychosomatic hospitals and rehabilitation hospitals which are financed by pension insurances. In psychiatric hospitals, the diagnosis is made according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and therapeutic attempts are made to achieve remission; specialized wards for the treatment of depression and a specific treatment algorithm are often available. In rehabilitation hospitals, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) plays an essential diagnostic role; a rehabilitation therapy standard for depressive disorders has been developed by Deutsche Rentenversicherung, the main German pension insurance. Besides cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and other therapies in accordance with the guidelines, for specific patient groups, Schema Therapy or Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is recommended as disorder-specific psychotherapy forms. The available treatments can also include pharmacotherapy with antidepressants, special group therapies for comorbid conditions, skills trainings and psychoeducation as well as occupational therapy, movement therapy, physio therapy and music therapy, social work, work with carers and self-help groups.
