The Crisis of Academic Freedom at the Beginning of the Twenty First Century. Europe in a Plural World

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter proposes to characterize the predicaments of academic freedom on the European continent in the first two decades of the 21st century as a “European crisis”. Although relevant national and global developments and challenges to academic freedom are also noticeable during this period, the situation in Europe cannot be understood and responded to adeptly if specific European features are ignored. The nature of the crisis is discussed identifying its main dimensions - political, legal and regulatory, and intellectual. Attempts to address the crisis as specifically European are already underway. They are scrutinized in this chapter looking at how they position Europe in the context of the global debate about academic freedom.
