Abstract

Salivas are secreted into the mouth by three pairs of major salivary glands and many minor glands and contain mixtures of ions, proteins, and glycoproteins which are necessary for maintaining oral homeostasis, exerting many effects on hard and soft tissues. Salivas must influence oral disease processes such as those which have been shown clearly to be associated with chronic ethanol consumption, although the mechanisms of such influences are ill-defined. Likewise, it is not clear if a causative relationship exists between ethanol-induced changes in salivary gland secretion and ethanol-associated oral disease.
