Abstract

This chapter explores the widening social spectrum of share holders in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Britain. In particular, it examines the democratization process - the extent to which share ownership spread beyond the affluent classes. It draws on a wide range of evidence, including new data drawn from a very large sample of shareholders, together with contemporary opinion and other forms of saving and investment activity.
