Abstract

This chapter presents the experiences of indebtedness during an era of extreme austerity in Greece. The principal aim is to contribute to debates on the psychosocial determinants of psychological wellbeing by drawing upon a qualitative analysis of the experiences of seven individuals in debt. A secondary aim if to bring to critical appraisal the stigmatisation of individuals in debt and the individualisation of indebtedness, an issue which mainly arises as a consequence of specific socioeconomic structures and arrangements (Turner, 2008).
