Abstract

Describing the Fifth Republic as a 'parenthesis' may sound gratuitously perverse. France has seen five republics, two empires, two sorts of monarchy, a consulate, and an 'état' since 1789. The Fifth Republic has already lasted longer than all but one of these, the Third Republic of 1870-1940. The Fifth Republic did not, as its defenders would hasten to point out, spring from nowhere.
