Abstract
The first novel in Amharic was published by Ethiopian writer Afäwärq Gäbrä-Iyäsus in 1908 under the title Ləbb Wälläd Tarik (‘Story born out of the heart’). This chapter surveys how we can analyse Ləbb Wälläd Tarik in conjunction with the processes of politico-economic globalisation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Scholarship on world literature has almost never taken the Amharic critical tradition into account, but the scholarly controversies surrounding Ləbb Wälläd Tarik in Ethiopian studies have a close bearing on current models of world literature, especially when it comes to debates on the merits and demerits of diffusionist frameworks.
