Abstract

The Moment of Disappearance is a major new commission by acclaimed Australian artist Kate McMillan, which continues her ongoing fascination with the island as a liminal space. In this five-screen installation presented in the dark confines of Bay 19 at Carriageworks, McMillan takes us on a journey though three uncanny landscapes, weaving together three distinct locations – Wadjemup (Rottnest Island), Pontikonisi and Port Arthur – and drawing their dark histories of detainment and isolation into striking parallel. This book is a compilation of essays, images and interviews that explore the work.
