N2 - The name of Judas, 'Iscariot', has long been a mystery. Why was he given this epithet? This study explores the various suggestions made to explain it, suggesting criteria of assessment in terms of the validity of these. This discussion supports the very early definition made by Origen - that the name Judas derives from the Hebrew/Aramaic root scr, 'stop up', 'block'. Given this, one may then consider how this meaning has informed the three stories of Judas's death, in Matt. 27:5, Acts 1:18 and Papias, Exposition 3.
