Abstract
This chapter will examine the Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) route. However, this is not possible in any meaningful way without some attention being paid to the context – of which the other nine alternatives form a part. It is also difficult, in this period of rapid change and development, to isolate significant developments from transient fads, so as to produce a considered and accurate view. Readers of this chapter, especially at some dis-tance in time from these events, should view this as if it were a news report from behind the front line – very much of its time
