Abstract

Language matters and even more so for those speaking from an influential and high office. The pressures on this language are much more intense. The attention received and the varieties of explanatory frameworks designed to decode it are more numerous. Academic-turned-politician Michael Ignatieff referred to this in ‘Fire and Ashes’, the title of his memoir reflecting on his doomed candidacy for the Canadian elections:

‘If you’ve spent your life as a writer, journalist and teacher, nothing prepares you for the use of language once you enter the political arena. It is unlike any word game you have ever played’
