Abstract

Drawing on documentation preserved in the military archives of the Florentine Republic, this article explores the careers of fifteenth-century gunpowder makers. It focuses particularly on their diverse training pathways and the practical knowledge that shaped their professional identities. The findings underscore the significant influence of warfare on employment opportunities, highlighting the growing role of the state in shaping jobs within the emerging field of military logistics.
