Treacherous Friends: Shakespeare's Variations on a Theme by Cervantes

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Shakespeare often uses the idea of friends, particularly male friends, whose relationship is disrupted by treachery. This is also found in Cervantes's story 'Cardenio', embedded in the narrative of Don Quixote I, which Shakespeare and Fletcher probably used as the source for their lost play, Cardenio.
