Abstract
By re-examining several of Tynyanov's key concepts (history, parody, sistemnost, ustanovka, dominanta, the 'literary fact', byt, the literary and extra-literary 'series', and the reader), this article suggests ways in which they can be used to inform non-'Formalist' theoretical agendas - and thereby offers a new perspective from which to explore the development, overall coherence and wider import of Tynyanov's work. It is argued that Tynyanov's writings can serve to problematize a number of binary pairs that have given rise to much intellectual debate in later decades: history and theory; historicism and system- building; necessity and chance; structuralism and subjectivity; the general and the particular; science and art; Lotman and Bakhtin;literature and society.
