Abstract
There is substantial evidence identifying how certain aspects of health and well-being vary by ethnic group. Marked ethnic inequalities have been reported in different measures of health and mortality (Salway et al, 2010). By highlighting examples of ethnic inequalities in health and explaining the drivers of these inequities, this chapter aims to provide a greater understanding of the interrelationships between aspects of minority ethnic status, structural factors and health. This chapter will: • present evidence on the patterning of health across different ethnic groups; • outline different approaches to analysing the relationships between ethnicity and health; • establish how different analytical approaches can shape our understanding of ethnic inequalities in health; and • explain how approaches must allow for the ways in which social structures influence health experiences.
