Abstract
Uniaxial stress measurements were carried out in absorption on the 1.563 eV zero phonon line observed in nickel-grown high pressure and high temperature synthetic diamonds after annealing to 1900 degreesC. Analysis of the data shows that the line is a transition between an A and a B state at a centre of monoclinic II (C-2) symmetry, with the electric dipole of the transition aligned at approximately 11.5degrees to the [110] direction in the (001) plane. A structure consistent with the data is an interstitial nickel atom with three next-nearest-neighbour nitrogen atoms in a (010) plane. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
