Abstract

The focus of this chapter is displacement, migration, and labour in the Middle East. Inspired by the diverse threads of Aziz Choudry’s work, we argue that standard approaches to the Middle East fail to capture the underlying causes of dispossession in the region, resorting to simplistic dichotomies such as ‘forced’ vs ‘economic’ migration, or ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors. Through an examination of the interplay between imperialism and displacement, settler colonialism and the situation of Palestinian refugees, and the centrality of migrant work to social structures in the Gulf, we explore how cross-border movements of people are connected to the making of labour and capitalism in the region.
