Abstract

This review covers two instalments in the Currency Press / National Film and Sound Archive's 'Australian Screen Classics' monograph series. Tina Kaufman's teleological study of WAKE IN FRIGHT (Ted Kotcheff, 1971) and Andrew Frost's more fragmented assessment of THE BOYS (Rowan Woods, 1998) each survey a film that taps into an unremittingly dark, violent masculine malevolence buried deep within the Australian national psyche.
