Weaning Strategies; Failure to Extubate

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference paper

    Abstract

Randomised trials have demonstrated that ventilation modes which support every spontaneous breath are most efficacious during weaning. Nasal continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) post extubation reduces the likelihood of reintubation in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants. Both methylxanthines and dexamethasone facilitate weaning and extubation.
