Abstract
This study explores factors relating to staff retention in intellectual disability services in England, drawing on qualitative elements of a mixed-methods study of the social care workforce (Hussein et al., 2014b). After establishing the need for this research, the article introduces the themes of
‘reciprocity’ and ‘hope’ as a potentially useful analytic conceptual framework to explore the findings of the research. Factors identified in the wider literature associated with staff retention are then presented and related to hope and reciprocity. Details of the research are given before setting out findings. Implications in relation to hope and reciprocity and further research in this area are explored in the final section.
