Abstract

Changes in the 4th edition of the WHO Classification of Headand Neck Tumours are reviewed focusing on their impact on the surgicalcare of diseases affecting the salivary glands, jaws and oral cavity.Updates to the salivary chapter include the addition of secretorycarcinoma and sclerosing polycystic adenosis. The odontogenic cysts areback and the odontogenic keratocyst is listed among them, having lost itsbrief and confusing designation as a neoplasm. The newly definedsclerosing odontogenic carcinoma and primordial odontogenic tumour areadded. Oropharyngeal tumours have been separated from the oral cavitytumours, reflecting the great importance of HPV in carcinoma of thetonsils. The problems of grading oral epithelial dysplasia persist.
