Written evidence from Dr Bence Nemeth, Defence Studies Department, King’s College London (Submitted in personal capacity) (ERM0004): Cooperation of Central European States regarding Managing Irregular Migration

Research output: Book/ReportReport

Abstract

After the end of the migration crisis of 2015-2016 Central European countries have significantly increased their foreign policy, military and police cooperation regarding managing mass irregular migration, and did this mostly in Central European regional multilateral formats outside of EU institutions.
In this regard, the Visegrad Group is the most relevant forum for foreign policy coordination, the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) is the most effective platform concerning defence collaboration and police cooperation is going on mostly in the ‘Salzburg Forum’.
The membership of these cooperative frameworks are not entirely the same, but they largely overlap with each other. This makes it possible that these countries are able to coordinate their efforts effectively among themselves and represent their interests together in the EU and the UN, although they do not always agree on every aspect about handling irregular mass migration.
