AN ALTERNATIVE UNDERSTANDING OF CMR-THE CASES OF COLOMBIA AND BRAZIL

Student thesis: Doctoral ThesisDoctor of Philosophy

Abstract

Since the 1800s, scholars have been exploring CMR, and the majority of their studies have been developed and focused on Western Countries. Although some academics have addressed CMR in South America, it has been only following the Western framework and perspectives. Thus, the literature exploring the realities of CMR regarding the second group remains scarce. With the aim to contribute to filling this gap, this research explored whether and to what extent an alternative understanding of the characteristics of CMR has developed in South America and investigates the specific cases of Colombia and Brazil.

This research builds on sociological approaches. Methodologically, it gathers empirical qualitative and quantitative information, by collecting data and information from surveys, interviews, and relevant documents, to investigate if CMR in Colombia and Brazil have developed a different trajectory from the mainstream approaches in the West. Thus, it revisits the classic theories on CMR and their limitations, capturing the unique dynamics exhibited by countries such as Colombia and Brazil. This research constitutes an attempt towards contributing to the development of theories on CMR in South America and creates a pioneer study of the cases of Colombia and Brazil.

Findings suggest that due to the distinctive development of Colombia and Brazil, have provided an alternative model of CMR different from the Western scope. At the theoretical level, the study indicates that there is a need for a more suitable approach when referring to CMR in South American countries.
