Abstract
This thesis examines the evolving understanding of Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) using an ecological framework. In doing so, it embraces criticisms of traditional linear policy models and research approaches, advocating for a more complex, interdisciplinary approach. The thesis integrates complexity theory to deepen the ecological framework, addressing the current lack of theoretical consistency in cultural studies. It adopts the term “Creative and Cultural Ecologies and Ecosystems” (CCEEs) to reflect this complexity, and to offer researchers and policymakers alike a unified conception. With an awareness of its limits, and yet confident of its epistemological value, the PhD relies on the London theatre ecosystem as a case study to prove the need for and benefits of adopting the ecological approach in the CCIs field. The research explores complex dynamics at micro, meso, and macro levels, emphasising the interconnectedness of individual career trajectories, organisational behaviours, and broader industry structures. The thesis seeks to answer two key questions: what complex dynamics are evident in the London theatre CCE at the micro, meso and macro levels? and how do the micro, meso and macro levels of the London theatre CCE interact and influence each other?
To answer these questions, the study utilises a mixed-methods approach. It employs a novel combination of network analysis and qualitative interviews (which are subject to thematic analysis), revealing how professional networks, career decision-making, and industry-specific dynamics shape CCIs. Key findings highlight the role of informal networks in career development, the impact of alternative/independent spaces in the industry, and the systemic interdependence among the main organisational spheres, namely not for profit, commercial and fringe theatres. The research underscores the need for a more comprehensive and holistic understanding of CCIs, challenging traditional linear policy models and advocating for a complexity-based approach.
